What is a Virtual Office?

A virtual office is a flexible business solution. It allows teams and companies to use a remote location as a business address, without entering into a lease contract.

A virtual office address can be used to register a business, open a bank account, meet with team members, and handle mail/packages. And just like a traditional office, virtual offices typically have dedicated workspaces and meeting rooms.

Key reasons why businesses seek out virtual offices include:

  • Address without physical presence. Many businesses want to establish their presence in a city or area without actually being there.
  • Convenience. Virtual offices have dedicated staff that run and maintain the space for its clients. In other words, you don’t have to occupy the space yourself.
  • Cost-efficiency. Virtual offices cost a fraction of what businesses usually pay for on office space rentals.

The Virtual Office Model Isn't New

The term “virtual office” dates as far back as July 12, 1982, when it was mentioned in InfoWorld, an American tech magazine.

Virtual office functions such as mail handling and receptionist services were first offered by California-based Barrister Executive Suites in 1992.

Since then, a host of companies have incorporated virtual offices into their business — like these ones on the left.

Frequently Asked Questions on Virtual Offices

Is a virtual office a physical space?

Contrary to the common misconception, a virtual office is not an online or digital space. It’s a physical space that can be legally used by teams and companies as their business address.

At the same time, a virtual office isn’t used or occupied full-time like a traditional office space. Businesses mainly use virtual offices for business registration, marketing purposes, receiving mail/packages, and occasional in-person meetings.

Is a virtual office right for me?

A virtual office is a suitable solution if you’re looking for a prestigious business address, but don’t want to pay a premium on office space rentals. Loft has flexible contract terms so that you can keep your options open.

A virtual office address may also be used by you and your team for the occasional in-person meeting or on-site work day.

What’s the difference between Virtual Office Plus vs Virtual Office Pro?

Virtual Office Pro gives you an address for both marketing and business registration purposes. The premium package also gives you more hours of free access to coworking space and meeting rooms (40 hours and 15 hours per month, respectively).

The address you get under Virtual Office Plus is limited to marketing purposes. Additionally, free use of coworking space and meeting rooms are 30 hours and 8 hours per month.
